Research shows that restricting your calories & training 5-7 days a week for long periods of time puts you at high risk of developing a condition called “relative energy deficiency in sport”, or “RED-s” for short. 


Relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S) is a condition of low energy availability affecting regularly active people of all levels and ages (Mountjoy et al., 2014) . 


"It has wide ranging adverse effects on all bodily systems and can seriously compromise long term health and performance"  (Constantini, 2011)


Things like low energy, irregular menstrual cycles, low sex drive, plateaued  performance and body composition changes. Restricting food combined with perfectionism is the recipe for POOR health
 



On average
a woman’s basal metabolic rate sits around 1300-1400 calories. Add a gym session, a daily walk, calories burned at work, AND the “thermic effect of food” (energy burned to digest food), would bring an average woman’s daily calorie requirement to anywhere between 1900 - 2500 calories!

There is so much conflicting information out there on how to lose weight, tone up, get rid of stubborn belly fat, cellulite off your legs, and how to get the body you want, it's hard to know who or what to trust.


That's why the best thing you can always do is look for the more qualified professionals in the field, that typically share evidence-based practices. That means that there is scientific research backing a certain piece of information or method.


Below are 4 of the biggest reasons why most diets and fitness programs just don't last. If you have tried and failed to lose weight or tone up in the past, then chances are it was because of 1 or more of these 4.


 



METABOLIC ADAPTATION


If you have been dieting or restricting your calories for a long time, then chances are your body has undergone what's called "metabolic adaptation".


This is one of your body's physiological survival mechanisms that has been observed time and time again in research (Trexler et al., 2014) ,(Leibel et al., 1995) ,(Muir, 2022).


When you've been restricting your calorie intake for a long time, your body adjusts its basal metabolic rate downward to suit the amount of food available. This essentially means that you need to be eating less and less every week in order to continue losing weight.




RESTRICTION FUELS OBSESSION


Have you ever tried a really restrictive diet, or a diet that cuts out an entire food group, like keto or vegan? If so, what was the first thing you did when you gave yourself permission to eat what you want again?


If you're anything like I was, you likely couldn't stop thinking about the favourite foods you were missing out on, until you ate the whole cupboard.


There is plenty of research out there (Trexler et al., 2014) ,(Leibel et al., 1995) ,(Muir, 2022) to prove that restrained eating actually increases the likelihood of "motivated overeating". Most restrictive diets, meal plans, challenges and even coaches definitely don't take this into account.
